Sigge Nisbeth
Sigge Nisbeth (b. 1987 in Uppsala, Sweden) is an internationally acclaimed violist recognized for their expressive artistry, technical brilliance, and commitment to expanding the viola repertoire. Sigge studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, and the Royal College of Music in London, and has since appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe and beyond.
Their international breakthrough came in 2012 as the first violist ever to win Sweden’s prestigious Solistpriset, followed by the Norwegian Soloist Prize in 2013. Sigge was subsequently selected as a “Rising Star” by the European Concert Hall Organisation, touring major concert halls throughout Europe. In 2023, they were awarded the Gålöstiftelsens / Sixten Gemzéus stora musikstipendium – Sweden’s largest national music prize – in recognition of their exceptional musicianship and artistic impact.
Sigge’s discography reflects both poetic sensitivity and bold artistic vision. Let Beauty Awake (BIS Records) received the distinction “The Strad Recommends,” while Invisible Cities (Daphne) was nominated for a Swedish Grammy (Grammis). They have also recorded and released the viola concertos by Arne Nordheim (LAWO Classics) and Allan Pettersson (BIS Records), performances that have been widely praised by international music critics for their depth, authority, and interpretative insight.
Alongside their performing career, Sigge is deeply engaged in pedagogy. During their studies they served as a teaching assistant at the Norwegian Academy of Music. In 2014 they were appointed Associate Professor of Viola at the University of Stavanger. Since 2017, Sigge has held a position as Associate Professor of Viola at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH), teaching at both Campus Edsbergs slott and Campus Valhallavägen. In 2025, they were appointed Head of Strings at KMH, further solidifying their influence on the next generation of string players.
