Higher Music Education

Musethica’s approach is grounded in the conviction that performance practice is a vital component of higher music education. By combining high-level music training with social engagement, Musethica allows students to develop not only technical and artistic skills, but also essential competencies such as empathy, communication, and artistic citizenship. Integrating Musethica into HMEIs strengthens the educational curriculum, offering students real-world experience in community-focused performance while earning academic recognition through ECTS credits.

Our journey within the academic sector began in 2017 at mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as a pilot project. In 2019, Musethica was offered as a focus option within the existing Postgraduate Chamber Music course, although the option was temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. Today, Musethica is recognised as an elective module at mdw with 4 ECTS points, fully embedded in the curriculum.

We prioritise sustainability by establishing long-term partnerships with HMEIs. Musethica training activities are often embedded into existing academic programmes and, in many cases, co-led with faculty members to ensure continuity, academic relevance, and institutional support. The Musethica programme is flexible in scope, with between one and four Musethica Sessions held per year. When integrated into the curriculum, Musethica Sessions are recognised with ECTS credits, although the number of points may vary depending on the institution.

Collaborating Higher Music Education Institutions.

Musethica actively expands its international network, presenting its model at major forums such as the Association Européenne des Conservatoires (AEC) Congress and engaging in ongoing dialogue with potential academic partners. In addition, Musethica is an associated partner of the IN.TUNE Alliance, the only European University Alliance dedicated to music and the arts. Within this framework, Musethica contributes its experience and expertise in audience engagement, social outreach, and performance practice - thereby supporting the development of innovative approaches to higher music education across Europe.

Past Collaborations.

The European Chamber Music Academy – ECMA is Europe’s leading network of music universities and festivals supporting emerging professional chamber music ensembles.

From September 2020 to August 2024, the ECMA Pro project, co-funded by the EU’s Creative Europe Programme, took ECMA activities to a new level by further developing chamber music training for selected ensembles. During this four-year period, the project successfully expanded training formats, addressed key developments in music education, and strengthened connections between educational programmes, professional practice, and social engagement.

Musethica collaborated with ECMA Pro to extend socially engaged chamber music activities. The partnership provided young ensembles with opportunities to apply their social commitment in real-world settings, while engaging audiences beyond traditional concert halls. Through a total of eight joint sessions, the project also promoted awareness of artists’ social responsibility, contributing directly to ECMA Pro’s overarching objectives.
