Povilas Jacunskas

Povilas Jacunskas was born in 1983, Vilnius. From 1988 to 2001, he studied cello with the teacher A. Palšauskas at the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Gymnasium. Currently he studies cello at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre with the assistant E. Kulikauskas.

In 1999 Povilas Jacunskas won the 2nd prize at the J. Fledžinskas National Young Performers Competition, in 2001, the 1st prize at the R. Katilius National Young Performers Competition and the 2nd prize at the J. J. F. Dotzauer International Cello Competition in Dresden, Germany, and in 2004, the 1st prize and a special prize for the interpretation of an opus by J. S. Bach at the 3rd K. Davidov International Cello Competition.

Povilas Jacunskas is also the laureate of national young performers’ chamber music competitions: in 1996 string trio, 2nd prize; in 1997 string quartet, 1st prize and in 2000 piano trio, absolute 1st prize. In 2001, he won the 2nd prize at the chamber music and string quartet competition-audition that took place at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. In 2004, Povilas Jacunskas won the 3rd prize at the International Chamber Music (duo sonatas) Competition in Finland.

Povilas Jacunskas has participated in many master classes: in Berlin High School of Music held by Prof. David Geringas, in Basel High School of Music held by Prof. H. Latzko (2002), and in 2003 he participated in an open lesson held by one of the most famous contemporary cellists Yo-Yo Ma. In 2003, he attended master classes held in Croatia by Latzlo Mez, one of the last students of the legendary cellist Pablo Casals, as well as in master classes held in Holland by the professor from the Cologne High School of Music, Frans Helmerson.

Povilas Jacunskas has given solo concerts together with the Latvian national Symphony, Lithuanian Chamber (conductor Prof. S. Sondeckis), St. Christophor Chamber (conductor Prof. D. Katkus), Kaunas Chamber (conductor P. Berman) and National M. K. Čiurlionis Art School Chamber (conductor P. Stepanovas) orchestras.

Povilas Jacunskas has been actively participating in the Lithuanian music scene not only as a soloist, but also as a performer of chamber music. He has given concerts in Latvia, Germany, France, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Holland, Croatia and other countries of Europe.
